Kansas City Current Fall to Angel City with Own Goal

Saturday night’s matchup between Angel City FC and Kansas City Current ended in 1-0 win for the Los Angeles team. The devastating loss for Kansas City was brought on by an own goal in the seventieth minute. The goal made by an unfortunate touch off of the Current’s Taylor Leach, was driven by an attacking Christen Press thwarting off four defenders. Press, the only Angel City player entering the attacking third, successfully forced Leach into an uneasy blocking position that landed the center back facing her own goal. Press centers the ball and with a one touch off of Leach the ball skims past KC goalkeeper Adriana Franch. ACFC commemorated the moment by ceremoniously piling on top of Press who lay just outside the post.

Kansas City, who unfortunately dealt with COVID protocols, were without four players and coach Matt Potter. While KC Current did give up the unlucky goal, goalkeeper Franch successfully deflected four shots on target from the aggressive Angel City. Including a strong attempt from ACFC’s Simone Charley, when at the thirty first minute the forward was able to charge past the entire defensive line. However, Franch was able to block the strike with a sliding kick save.

Goalkeeping was the crucial crutch that allowed Angel City to walk away with all three points and maintain their second place standings for week four. ACFC’s goalkeeper and player of the match Didi Haracic, successfully deflected one of the Current’s most pivotal goal opportunities, when a free kick was awarded in the ninth minute. The kick taken from the edge of the penalty box by KC’s Alexis Loera, shot to the top left corner was knocked away by a touch from Haracic.

East Coast meets West Coast when Gotham City FC meets Angel City at Banc of California next Sunday, May 29th. Kansas City who currently sits in the eleventh slot, finalize their three game road trip and meet OL Reign at Lumen Field Wednesday May 25th. Both games can be viewed on Paramount +.
