Freya Coombe took on the challenging role of leading an expansion club with ambitious goals. ACFC’s decision to part ways with Coombe came after careful deliberation and evaluation of the team’s current standing, the club felt a change was necessary.
ACFC General Manager Angela Hucles Mangano expressed gratitude for Coombe’s contributions, stating, “We sincerely wish Freya all the best, and she will forever hold an indelible place in Angel City’s history.” Co-Founder and President Julie Uhrman echoed these sentiments, acknowledging the immense responsibility Coombe undertook as the inaugural head coach and praising her for embracing the opportunity and the accompanying pressure. Uhrman also commended Coombe for building a competitive team that challenged more experienced clubs.
The decision to part ways with Coombe opens a new chapter for ACFC, and in the interim, Assistant Coach Becki Tweed will assume the responsibilities of head coach. Tweed, who joined ACFC as Assistant Coach in January 2023, brings a wealth of experience to the role. Before joining ACFC, she served on the coaching staff of NJ/NY Gotham FC for two years, and she has a total of 12 years of professional coaching experience. In addition to her role with ACFC, Tweed is currently an Assistant Coach for the US U-20 Women’s Youth National Team.
The appointment of Tweed as interim head coach demonstrates the club’s confidence in her abilities to guide the team through this transitional period. ACFC is undoubtedly counting on her expertise and leadership to maintain the club’s competitive spirit and drive for success.
As ACFC bids farewell to Freya Coombe, the focus now shifts to finding a permanent replacement who can continue building upon the strong foundation Coombe established. ACFC remains committed to its ambitious goals and is determined to secure a coach who aligns with the club’s vision and can lead them to new heights.
With possible options in Margueritte Aozasa, Carm Moscato, Twila Kilgore and possibly also in Canada’s head coach Bev Preistman, it’ll be interesting to see who ultimately takes over. Freya Coombe’s departure marks a watershed point in ACFC’s history, but it also represents an opportunity for growth and progress.
The journey continues for Angel City Football Club as they navigate the ever-evolving world of professional women’s soccer.
