Brazil ready to shine at the FIFA Women’s World Cup

Brazil are ready to shine at the World Cup once again. Brazil have represented their country at every Women’s World Cup to date. Australia and New Zealand will be their 9th appearance in the competition.

In 2007, their best performance to date, the Brazilians beat USA 4-0 in the semi-finals. But lost to Germany in the finals, finishing runners-up. Since then, A Seleção have fallen short to USA, Australia and France to be eliminated in the opening knockout round on each occasion. Now the Brazilians want to go one step further.

The squad arrives in Australia and New Zealand as South American Champions after winning the Copa America last summer. In April this year, the Brazilians took England to penalties at the first ever Women’s Finalissima. They played with confidence but fell short during the shoot out. Days later, they proved themselves in an impressive 2-1 win over Germany – a result that can only have boosted their confidence. Their 8 Copa America titles in only 9 tournaments shows their excellence on the continental stage, considering their quality they are hopeful that 2023 could be their year.

Brazil will face Panama (24th July), France (29th July) and Jamaica (2nd August) in their Group F games.

The Manager

Manager, Pia Sundhage, is known for both her playing and coaching careers. As a player with her national team, Pia scored 71 goals in 146 caps. She is an experienced boss with two Olympic gold medals and a runners up finish at the 2011 World Cup all with the USA. Brazil have shown they can adapt to tactics to suit the opposition under their Swedish manager. They have developed a versatility, scoring 20 goals and conceding none in their Copa America 2022 campaign. Sundhage, known for her ability to get the best out of her players by developing their talent.

 

Key Player – Debinha

After the Olympics in Tokyo 2022, it was very clear that Debinha had very much become the focal point of the team. Pia said that she “represents what A Seleção is all about.” The rising international star, top scorer at the Copa America was shortlisted for The Best FIFA Women’s Player award (6th overall). She is a versatile and talented forward at an all time high in her career right now. Hoping to get on the score sheet for her nation this summer, there’s no doubt Debinha will be one of the key players for this South American side.

 

One to Watch – Kerolin

The manager has obviously given a lot of time to the North Carolina Courage forward. Given her ability and talent Pia was never in doubt of calling the young Brazilian up. Kerolin, known for her skills in tight situations, 1 v 1s and her explosive running with the ball at her feet. Sundhage described her as an “unpredictable player who knows how to use that gift.”

The 23 player squad was announced by manager Pia Sundhage at a press conference on June 27th. This video was then released announcing the squad with the message – “The names of our players are already engraved in the mouths and hearts of 215 million Brazilians. The search for the long-awaited first star of our Brazilian Women’s Soccer Team has begun.” This video can be used to help with pronunciations of the players names involved in this summers tournament.
