March 23, 2022, UWCL quarter-final between Arsenal and Wolfsburg at the Emirates Stadium
The Emirates played host to an exceptional Champion’s League clash as two-time winners Wolfsburg was held to a 1-1 draw under the North London floodlights.
Chances in the early stages fell to both teams as Vivianne Miedema and Beth Mead both went close for Arsenal, and Svenja Huth was just behind a fine cross from Lena Lattwein.
While Arsenal created chances, Wolfsburg stood firm. Heavy touches and misplaced passes were pounced on by Die Wolfinnen, with Arsenal’s relentlessness in attack only helping Wolfsburg’s lightning-quick counterattacks.
Tabea Waßmuth finally broke the deadlock. A good ball in from Wedemeyer found its way to Waßmuth, who got past Beth Mead and headed home underneath Manuela Zinsberger.
The second half was much the same, with Wolfsburg happy to let Arsenal tire themselves out. The Emirates let out an almighty cheer as Lia Walti slipped through Sweden forward Stina Blackstenius. They comfortably fired home, having rounded Wolfsburg’s Schult – only for the linesperson to deem her offside.
Waßmuth and Huth came close to extending Wolfsburg’s lead as the former hit the inside of the post and the latter dragged a shot just wide of the post, but it would be a homegrown talent that would bring jubilation to North London.
A free-kick routine saw Tobin Heath hit the ball along the ground, finding long-time Arsenal fan Lotte Wubben-Moy who smashed a fine finish beyond Schult to send the Emirates into raptures.
