March 17, Match 12/22 in the Barclays Women’s Super League, defending league champions Chelsea took on Everton after the fixture was previously postponed at Walton Hall Park.
This one started as we expected: Chelsea dominated from the word go, with Everton struggling to string together a sequence of passes before losing the ball to the Chelsea midfield or front three.
Chelsea’s first of the night came seven minutes in and was a typical Sam Kerr headed finish, glancing the ball beyond Courtney Brosnan, standing in for the dropped Sandy MacIver.
At the fifteen-minute mark, Chelsea doubled their lead through a thumping Guro Reiten strike, sending a first-time shot into the roof of the net from a distance.
Chelsea continued to dominate as Harder went close from a Niamh Charles cross, but her header at the back post only found the side netting.
A third of the night came from a glorious Erin Cuthbert shot 25-yards out. Fleming teed it up for Erin to strike into the top corner, helped on by the hand of Brosnan, who could do nothing to keep it out.
Chances eventually became few and far between as Everton got their entire team behind the ball for the rest of the half.
The second half was surprisingly tame, with neither side fashioning clear opportunities. In the second half, Everton must be commended for their superb defence display, reducing Chelsea to set-piece and speculative efforts, frustrating the away side.
