Welcome to the Sporting Her Book Club! The Book Club is our new monthly series where we highlight books written about female or gender diverse athletes, administrators, and others involved in women’s sport. Our aim is to promote and create discussions about the many wonderful stories about women’s sport. These stories are plentiful and incredible, but much like the women’s sports industry as a whole, far too few people know they exist. We would love for you to get involved – read along, leave comments, and recommend books.
The What
The Sporting Her Book Club will feature a new book each month. These books will be about women in sport. Whether they’re biographies about past or present athletes, or a behind-the-scenes tell-all from someone involved off the pitch, any book about women’s sports is eligible. We have some ideas for books to discuss, but we also want you to be involved. Please feel free to send in recommendations of books for us to read and discuss.
The Why
Just as women’s sport is growing as an industry, so is the number of stories being told about it. However, just like the wider women’s sports industry, the books about it remain difficult to access. Female athletes are telling powerful stories of the adversity they have overcome to reach where they are today. Authors are seeking out untold tales from the long and rich history of women in sport. Yet these voices remain unheard and the stories unread. The Sporting Her Book Club aims to be a step towards rectifying this.
