Aggie Beever-Jones is one of the Cobham girls who have grown up within the Chelsea Academy. So far this season the Chelsea forward has had some praiseworthy performances within the WSL and other competitions.
Aggie Beever-Jones’ interest in football was sparked at a young age after her grandad would regularly take her to Stamford Bridge. She began her football journey at a young age when she played for a local league boys team, in a position that differs to her current, as a goalkeeper. At the age of 8, the youngstar trialled for the Chelsea Academy in which she was initially rejected, however this only encouraged her to work harder. The following year, age 9-10, Beever-Jones re-trialled for the Chelsea Academy in which she was accepted.
Club career
8 years later, after progressing her way through the Chelsea academy, Beever-Jones made her senior debut for Chelsea during the 2020/21 season in a 4-0 win against Aston Villa. This led to the signing of her first professional contract in the summer of 2021, which was with her academy club, Chelsea. Beever-Jones described this offer as a “dream come true”, and made her ‘die-hard Chelsea fan’ grandad incredibly proud.
For the 2021/22 season the fresh blue went on loan to Bristol city in which she scored 5 league goals within her 22 appearances within the women’s championship. On Bristol City’s opening match of the season she was subbed on in the second half, scoring a late goal in a 4-3 goal loss to crystal palace. In November 2021, she was nominated for her first FA Women’s Championship goal of the season after she scored the final goal in a 3-0 win against blackburn rovers. After her time at Bristol City, Lauren Smith, City’s Manager, described Beever-Jones as a phenomenal talent who she hopes will continue to grow as a player.
Everton was Beever-Jones’ temporary home for their 2022/2023 Barclays WSL campaign after signing a season-long loan. During her time at Everton the manager, Brian Sørensen, considered the forward to be one of England’s rising stars. She made her first appearance and start for the Toffee’s opening game of the Barclays WSL 2022/23 season as a forward. Four months later she scored her first goal for everton with a sublime goal against West Ham which led to a 3-0 victory. The young forward ended her season making 21 appearances and 3 goals with the Merseyside team.
Over the past two years that she spent on loan, she felt that both Bristol City and Everton helped her develop her all-round skills and helped her to become a better player on and off the pitch.
In January 2024, Chelsea confirmed her new contract with the blues which is set until Summer 2026 (with the option to extend it for a further year). In response to her new contract, Chelsea’s general manager, Paul Green, expressed his team’s “delight” at seeing her make a difference at the senior level after ‘graduating’ from the youth academy.
With the 201 minutes she’s played this season, the impact that she has had so far in the WSL has been extraordinary. With Beever-Jones netting 5 league goals this season, this equals an average of 0.56 goals per match, making it 40 minutes per goal. The forward pocketed her first Chelsea goal in a 4-2 victory against Brighton in October.
Less than a month into the 2023/2024 season, she pocketed her first goal for the blues in a 4-2 Victory against Brighton. The true blue followed this up with scoring a goal at each of the next two games with her superb third goal against everton leading to a nomination for the barclays WSL player of the month for November. With four out of her five goals coming from the bench, ABJ has been labelled by fans as ‘the super sub’.
International career
From the under-15’s to the under-23’s Beever-Jones has continued to represent her Country on multiple levels.
In 2019, Beever-Jones was called up for England under-23 squad to help her team in the first round of the 2020 U-17 Championship qualifiers. She played against european countries such as Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and belgium and she made her way on the score sheet against Bosnia. However due to the Covid-19 Pandemic the rest of this tournament was cancelled.
The following year, in October 2021 she was named in the Under-19 squad where she made her debut against the Republic of Ireland for the 2022 Under-19 Championship qualifiers, in which she scored the final goal leading to an 8-1 victory. In the second round she struck the first goal against Iceland and didn’t stop there with going on to score a hat-trick against Belgium in April. This led to the qualification of England for the 2022 Under-19 championship, in which she striked two goals against Norway in the group stages.
As she progressed her way into the Under-23s squad, she scored yet another goal against Norway which led to a 1-1 draw in the inaugural U23 European League in September 2023. She had scoring fever as just four days later after scoring against Norway she scored another brilliant goal against Belgium in a 3-0 victory. Since then the forward has been called up twice in the Under-23 squad and has been considered for the senior team.
Sarina Wiegman, the Lionesses manager, has spoken about Beever-Jones’ inclusion in the senior team saying “she just keeps improving and gives us headaches with our selection”. Although she was not included within the most recent senior call ups, many fans are questioning when we will see the young talented forward to appear in the squad.
Although her career has only just begun we have seen many praiseworthy performances that are worthy of recognition and shows how much of an asset she is to her teams. Although she is considered as becoming one of the best players in the next generation, she has acknowledged that ‘she still has a long way to go but Chelsea is the best environment to help her progress further to where she wants’.
