Tottenham Hotspur Women’s 2023/2024 WSL season so far…

Spurs hope for a better-placed finish this season.

Tottenham Hotspur Women have been on the up since Robert Vilahamn came into charge in July.

After spending the entirety of his managerial career in Sweden, the top-rated manager arrived in North London and was greeted by a depleted Spurs side.

Tottenham came into this current campaign following a lacklustre 2022/2023 season resulting in a 9th place finish. While 9th doesn’t sound too terrible, relegation to the FA Women’s Championship was a palpable possibility towards the back end of the season.

Vilahamn took over from Rehanne Skinner after Spurs suffered 14 defeats in the entirety of 2022/2023 season – with a brief stint from Vilahamn’s assistant, Vicky Jepson following Skinner’s departure.

Robert Vilahamn’s squad are currently in exceptional form, after swerving defeat in each of their last seven matches. Tottenham Women have won three WSL games in this campaign, two fewer than the whole of their 2022/2023 season.

Robert Vilahamn’s impact has been crystal clear, nevertheless summer signing Martha Thomas’ influence ought to not be overlooked. The Scottish international has been nothing short of revolutionary after she joined Spurs Women from Manchester United Women in September of this year.

The 27-year-old’s impact has been prevalent from the get-go, her current goal tally tops the WSL Golden Boot standings, netting 6 times in 7 games. If that wasn’t enough accolades for Thomas, the star striker was named Barclays Player of the Month for October. Thomas scored a hat-trick against Aston Villa, after going behind in the opening minutes of the game, Tottenham fought back to seal a 4-2 victory.

Tottenham Hotspur Women sit fifth in the WSL after 7 games following a 1-1 draw against Leicester City – making it a hat-trick of draws for Spurs. Although, the month of October provided notable wins for the North London club, comfortably beating Bristol City, Brighton and Hove Albion and Aston Villa. Tottenham’s only defeat in the WSL so far was against reigning champions and London rivals, Chelsea, in the first game of the season.

Vilahamn will have to manage his team carefully as the football Christmas period rears it’s head. The Spurs manager should use the men’s team as a clear example of how injuries can escalate rapidly with a heavy workload – after Ange Postecoglou’s side learnt the hard way before the international break.

Next up in the WSL for Spurs is a trip to Gareth Taylor’s Manchester City in gameweek 8. Last time out, City were victorious against their Manchester rivals in front of a record 43,615 crowd at Old Trafford.

Watch the fierce encounter between Manchester City and Spurs on Sky Sports on today (Sunday November, 26) at 6:45pm (UK).
