Brighton has announced the long-term acquisition of former Spain midfielder Vicky Losada. After a four-month tenure at Roma, the 32-year-old was a free agent and will join pending the outcome of a successful visa application.

After bringing in Pauline Bremer earlier this month, Melissa Phillips (Brighton FC women’s manager) has now added Losada to her roster for the summer. Phillips expressed her feelings towards her new signing , in the official Brighton statement about her signing:

“We are very happy to welcome Vicky to Brighton and Hove Albion. She’ll bring an abundance of experience the team both on and off the pitch in the season ahead. She has achieved much success in her career and that will help drive the winning mentality within our squad. We are certain that her knowledge of the game will add to the identity that we are continuing to build as a group.”

Vicky Losada career

Losada has 67 international caps for her country, Spain. She has spent the majority of her career at FC Barcelona, where she also won numerous domestic championships and the Champions League in 2021.

After previous stints at Manchester City and at Arsenal from 2015 to 2016 Losada is back in the WSL for the upcoming 2023/24 season, Losada will join Brighton as her third Women’s Super League team that she has been a part of, she has enjoyed a very successful career, winning eight Catalunya Cups, the Women’s FA Cup, two League Cups, the Spanish Super Cup, seven Spanish Cups, six Spanish League crowns, the Italian League (serie A), the Women’s FA Cup, and the Champions League with Barcelona.

She made 11 appearances for her now former side Roma in the 2022/23 season scoring one goal along the way, she played an important role in her teams campaign as a defensive midfielder throughout the season.

What does this mean for Brighton?

Brighton in the previous season struggled throughout the year but picked up towards the end of the season keeping their WSL hopes alive as they finished 11th, five points adrift from the relegation spot which saw Reading Women play at the championship next season.

The 35-year-old Melissa Phillips is the team’s fourth boss this season, after former England manager Hope Powell in October 2022, former Bayern Munich manager Jens Scheuer in March 2023, and assistant manager Amy Merricks’ two interim stints.

The difficulty Phillips will confront in getting Brighton back on track in the Women’s Super League next season does not deter her. After leading London City Lionesses to the top of the Championship in January of this year.

Although Brighton did not have the smoothest of journeys last season, they did reach the Semi Final of the Women’s FA cup against Manchester United , after Danielle carters equaliser they did unfortunately fall short to a last minute a 3-2 defeat after a Rachel Williams goal, having being one game away from Wembley, Phillips side surely had a lot of positives to task from that game

Brighton are aiming to make a statement for the upcoming season, adding serious names to their squad to add to their hopes of a more successful campaign in the new season.
